چکیده
AHSI~H; \C. I . An equittion based on weather diitit explained differences in capture counts of pine bark beetles trapped twice weekly for an entire year at a single infestation and contributed to the understanding of some ;tspects of beetle dynamics. The proportion ctf the beetles that reached the traps increased with maximum temperature and decreased with heavy rain. Production of adults tended to be low in midsummer. Fo~ t s I . Influence of temperature on spring flight initiation for southwestern ponderosa pine bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae).
Determination of temperature requirements for many economically important insects is a cornerstone of pest management. For bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), this information can facilitate timing of management strategies. Our goals were to determine temperature predictors for flight initiation of three species of Ips bark beetles, five species of Dendroctonus bark beetles, a...
متن کاملEffects of available water on growth and competition of southern pine beetle associated fungi.
Competitive, interactions among bark beetle associated fungi are potentially influenced by abiotic factors. Water potential, in particular, undergoes marked changes over the course of beetle colonization of tree hosts. To investigate the impact of water potential on competition among three southern pine beetle associated fungi, Ophiostoma minus, Entomocorticium sp. A and Ceratocystiopsis ranacu...
متن کاملThe Southern Pine Beetle and Pine Forest Ecosystems
Dendroctonus frontalis, the southern pine beetle (SPB), is a highly destructive species of bark beetle that inhabits pine forests in the southern United States and parts of Central America. @6D In natural pine forests, the ecological role of the SPB presumably is to hasten the demise of weak or damaged trees, perhaps creating kindling for fires that contribute positively to the long-term health...
متن کاملEffects of mass inoculation on induced oleoresin response in intensively managed loblolly pine.
Oleoresin flow is an important factor in the resistance of pines to attack by southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., and its associated fungi. Abiotic factors, such as nutrient supply and water relations, have the potential to modify this plant-insect-fungus interaction; however, little is known of the effects of inoculation with beetle-associated fungi on oleoresin flow. We observ...
متن کاملRed-cockaded Woodpecker Centers On
T he southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus fiontalis (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), and the red-cockaded woodpecker, Picoides borealis, are indigenous species that occur together in pine (Pinus sp.) forests of the southern United States. For different reasons, these organisms have been the focus of considerable research. Interest in the southern pine beetle centers on the role this insect plays as a pe...
